OBU’s Elrod Center hosts annual Dating, Engagement and Marriage Week March 1-6

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University’s Ben M. Elrod Center for Family and Community will host the annual Dating, Engagement and Marriage Week March 1-6 on Ouachita’s campus. The theme of building strong relationships will be incorporated into Ouachita’s weekly events through Noonday, chapel and Refuge. There will also be breakout sessions for students and off-campus events for married and engaged couples.

“This is a fun week,” said Judy Duvall, assistant director of the Elrod Center. “Our students are of course interested in romantic relationships, and we want to give them the tools they need to have strong relationships centered in Christ.”

Ouachita Baptist University to host KALEO ministry conference Feb. 27

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University will host “KALEO: Arkansas ’10” on the university’s Arkadelphia campus Saturday, Feb. 27.

KALEO, a New Testament Greek word that means “to be called,” is a specialized conference designed to guide emerging leaders to discover, embrace and pursue God’s call to change the world. The Arkadelphia event is co-sponsored by Ouachita, the Arkansas Baptist State Convention, Williams Baptist College, the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board and International Mission Board and LifeWay Christian Resources.

Ouachita students named to Collegiate Honors Choir

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—The Southwestern region of the American Choral Directors’ Association (ACDA) offers a Collegiate Honors Choir conference every other year. This year the conference will be held in Denver, Colo., from Feb. 24-27, and Ouachita Baptist University will send seven music education majors.

The ACDA is a group of choral directors that meets every two years. It is divided into regions, and during the years between formal meetings, each region holds an honors choir conference.

Ouachita Sounds to perform campus concert March 5

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University’s Ouachita Sounds will perform on Friday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Jones Performing Arts Center on Ouachita’s campus.

Ouachita Sounds will perform a high-energy concert featuring a tribute to Michael Jackson. The concert will include a variety of solo and ensemble pieces as well as dance performances.

OBU Film Society to host screening of “Vertigo” Feb. 28

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University’s Film Society will host a screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic “Vertigo” on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 8 p.m. in room 330 of Lile Hall on Ouachita’s campus. Free refreshments will be served, and following the movie, there will be a drawing for a free T-shirt.

“The OBU Film Society began in the fall of 2007 with the showing of ‘Stranger Than Fiction,’ starring Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaall and Emma Thompson,” said Dr. Doug Sonheim, the Clarence and Bonnie Sue Anthony Professor of Bible and Humanities and chair of OBU’s English department.

iPad revealed: Apple reinvents tablet computing

For years now, people have been on their toes waiting for the release of Apple’s new revolutionary computing tablet. After much speculation and excitement, the device has finally arrived: The Apple iPad.

Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, revealed the iPad on Wednesday, Jan. 27, and gave the media a chance to tour all of its features. The iPad was breathtaking, but more or less puzzling in its function.

OBU’s annual International Food Fest set for Feb. 16

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University’s International Club along with the Daniel and Betty Jo Grant Center for International Education will host the International Food Festival on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. in Ouachita’s Walker Conference Center.

The International Food Fest is an opportunity for students and faculty to come together and learn about the different cultures at Ouachita. “We pretty much have food from all around the world that is prepared by students, faculty or other Ouachita affiliates,” said International Club President Willy Rasilim, a senior accounting and business administration/finance major from Tangerang, Indonesia.

Hannah Chapman named district winner at Metropolitan Opera auditions

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Hannah Chapman, a senior vocal performance major at Ouachita Baptist University, was named one of the five district winners at the recent Metropolitan Opera auditions. The competition was held at Stella Boyle Smith Auditorium on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and featured 23 singers ranging from 22 to 30 years of age. Chapman was the youngest at age 22.

Chapman, a native of Forney, Texas, was accompanied by Phyllis Walker and is trained by Dr. Glenda Secrest, OBU associate professor of music.
