The downtown Arkadelphia Royal movie theater plan has been denied bond funding with a 3-2 vote against by the Arkadelphia City Board of Directors on Thursday, Feb. 18, at one of their regular meetings.

Speaker reveals Genesis origins

John H. Walton Ph.D., Old Testament professor at Wheaton is the author of many books on the Old Testament and the editor of some widely recognizable commentaries. He is highly respected among many evangelical scholars.

“My title for the Monday evening lecture is ‘The Genesis Account of Origins and its Relationship to Modern Secular Theories of Origins.’ It will be a presentation of the position that I developed in my recent book, ‘The Lost World of Genesis One: Ancient Cosmology and the Origins Debate,’” Walton said.

College Republicans assist state Republicans, spread GOP ideas

As the 2010 election season nears, College Republicans around the state and the nation prepare to garner conservative support and win as many elected offices as possible.

“College Republicans exists to encourage Republican ideals on this campus and community,” said junior Bethany Whitfield, chair of College Republicans at Ouachita. “As college students, we have a unique opportunity to be the hands and feet of the party. That’s our goal, to help the state party.”

Oscars 2010

Awards come, awards go. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences introduced the animated feature film category in 2001. From 1995-99, an award for original musical or comedy score existed. And back when dancing was an elemental part of American filmmaking, between the eight and 10th ceremonies, dance directors were rewarded for their outstanding achievements with golden statues.

Ouachita Sounds group to perform Michael Jackson tribute

Tomorrow night Ouachita Sounds will debut a unique show that is sure to be thrilling in every sense of the word.

Ouachita Sounds will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Fri., March 5 in the Jones Performing Arts Center (JPAC).The show will feature a variety of solo and ensemble pieces, dance performances and a special tribute to Michael Jackson.

Birkett Williams lecturer analyzes American terrorism policies

R. Kim Cragin, PhD, a senior political analyst with the RAND Corporation, will speak at the annual Birkett Williams Lecture tonight at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall.

“[Cragin] will assess the United State’s policy to contain al-Qaeda — what has worked and what hasn’t worked — and present a policy statement on how to table al-Qaeda,” said Dr. Danny Hays, dean of Christian studies.

Pruet School to host Dr. John Walton in guest lecture March 8

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University’s Pruet School of Christian Studies will host Dr. John Walton in a guest lecture Monday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Hickingbotham Hall’s Young Auditorium. He also will be on campus the following day to speak in chapel and Christian studies classes.

Additionally, Walton will meet with student members of Theta Alpha Kappa at lunch on Tuesday, March 9, to discuss issues related to a career as a scholar. At 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Walton will be available to meet with students interested in exploring the possibility of graduate study at Wheaton College’s Biblical Exegesis program.

Film Society views, discusses ‘quality films’

For the most part, everyone likes movies. The Ouachita Film Society, sponsored by the English department, the School of Humanities and the College Society, allows people to come together to view and discuss quality films. It creates a community that fosters a healthy and enriching experience of the arts. Plus there is free food and a chance to win a T-shirt.

DEM Week, Events to foster healthy, stable love relationships

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 15,900 divorces, in Ark., in 2008 and the U.S. Census Bureau also shows a rise in divorces all across America.

The Elrod Center hosts an annual event to slow this trend called Dating, Engagement, Marriage and Family week (DEM). DEM this year will be March 1-6. DEM “is dedicated to educating single and married students alike about the process of building strong relationships. During this week, we make it our goal to create events that cater to your needs to help you develop healthy dating, marriage and family relationships.”- according to the Elrod Center Web site.
