T here are a lot of activities on campus this week, but arguably the crowning glory (and the reason behind it all) is the football game on Saturday. This year, the Student Senate, which is in charge of organizing the day’s festivities, has decided to add something extra.

“We, meaning Senate, will be passing out purple pom-pons to the crowd just to add more color and add to the amount of school spirit and pride,” said Monica Wood, senior class president and chairman of Senate’s Homecoming committee.

Don’t worry; there won’t be a hike in ticket prices or tuition to pay for all that Tiger pride.

“Senate has been very fortunate in the past years to receive a Pepsi grant,” Wood said. “And these funds not only go to pay for Homecoming and the Academic Banquet in the spring, but also we help clubs and organizations fund their various requests that they send into Senate.”

Although the game is the culmination of countless hours of preparation, the week also started off with a new tradition called “Lunch on the Lawn.”

“We really wanted to give the Homecoming queen nominees more publicity, and in doing so we have created a new event, ‘Lunch on the Lawn’ with our football players and Homecoming candidates,” said Jeff Garner, student body president. “It [‘Lunch on the Lawn’] gives the student body a chance to get to know the girls before voting on Tuesday and we are supporting our football players in recognition of the Homecoming game, so they will be escorting the girls at this event.”

The 2007 Homecoming game against Southern Arkansas University is this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The crowning of the Homecoming Queen will take place at 1 p.m.

Garner expects nothing but a victory at the game.

“The campus will be nicely decorated in preparation for our families and friends, and we look forward to another Tiger victory.”
