OBU presents Dr. Margaret Garrett in a faculty recital

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will present Dr. Margaret Garrett, Dr. Ouida Keck, Heather Scott and Kristin Grant in a faculty recital on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

Dr. Margaret Garrett, soprano, will be singing accompanied by piano, cello and flute. Dr. Keck will accompany on the piano with Scott playing cello and Grant playing flute.

Garrett will open the recital with Beethoven’s “Come Draw We Round a Cheerful Ring” and “On the Massacre of Glencoe,” followed by Bach’s “Bete aber auf dabei,” Handel’s “Tornami a vagheggiar” and Saint-Saëns’ “The Swan.” Also included will be Fauré’s “Après un reve,” Strauss’ “Ich wollt ein strausslein binden” and “Als mir dein Leidd erklang,”Piazzolla’s “Le Grand Tango” and Lobos’ “Aria.” She will conclude with Previn’s “Vocalise,” Schmidt’s “Something has Happened” and Shire’s “Baby, Baby, Baby.”

An assistant professor of music and voice, Garrett is in her second year teaching studio voice and vocal literature at Ouachita. She holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Voice Performance degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master of Music in Voice Performance degree from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts.

“I love that singing provides me with and outlet to express emotions that mere words can’t express,” Garrett said. “I also love the challenge of learning new music and the partnership of working with other musicians.” Garrett said she has been studying voice since the age of 13.

Dr. Ouida Keck, professor of music at Ouachita, teaches applied piano, piano pedagogy and piano ensemble. She has been at Ouachita for 25 years. She earned a Bachelors of Music degree in Piano Performance degree from Ouachita, a Masters of Music in Piano Performance degree from the University of Arkansas and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Iowa. Keck, an Arkadelphia native, said she enjoys “sharing beautiful and meaningful music with others and collaborating with my colleagues.”

Heather Scott is an adjunct instructor in music at Ouachita. She and her husband, Dr. Sean Scott, assistant professor of history, joined the Ouachita faculty in 2008.

Kristin Grant is an instructor of music at Ouachita. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Arizona and a Master of Music degree at the University of North Texas.
