ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University will host Dr. Jay C. Bulen, trombone, in a guest recital on Monday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public. Bulen will collaborate with pianist Kazuo Murakami.
Bulen will begin with Joseph Edouard Barat’s “Andante et Allegro,” followed by Richard Peaslee’s “Arrows of Time.” Also included will be Folk Rabe’s “Basta,” followed by an intermission. Murakami will join Bulen in playing Robert Spillman’s “Two Songs for Bass, Trombone and Piano,” followed by Daniel Schnyder’s “Sonata for Bass Trombone and Piano.” Bulen and Murakami will conclude with Jan Koetsier’s “Falstaffiade for Bass Trombone and Piano.”
Bulen, professor of music at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., has been a member of the faculty at Truman State since 1995 and has served since 2006 as the university’s chair of the department of music. He holds a doctorate of music arts degree from the University of Washington, a master of music degree from Arizona State University and a bachelor of fine arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts.
Bulen has been a featured soloist with several ensembles in Ecuador and the United States and has taught at the University of Washington, Arizona State University and the Academia Cotopaxi and Centro de Difusion Musical in Quito. He also is involved in researching the applications of science to music; his research has included such topics as brass instrument acoustics, timbre perception and hearing development in infants.
Kazuo Murakami serves on the piano faculty at the University of Central Arkansas. Before moving to Conway, he was on the faculty of Truman State University. He has performed both as a soloist and collaborative artist in recitals across the U.S., Europe and Asia. Recent engagements include performances in Finland, Thailand, Germany and Singapore. Murakami received his master of music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. In addition to earning the Artist’s Diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music, he has completed the coursework for the doctor of musical arts in piano performance and pedagogy degree at the University of Iowa.
