Sale raises money for scholarships

April 26, 2009

On Friday, May 1, the Ouachita Student Foundation will be hosting its first annual rummage sale from 1-4 p.m. in the courtyard, weather permitting.

The purpose of the sale is to raise funds for OSF to reward scholarships to deserving upperclassmen.

“The rummage sale is a new fund-raising event we’re trying this year,” said junior Philip Williamson. “Our chief goal as an organization is to keep students at OBU and make sure they enjoy their time while they’re here.”

Nathan Shelburne, director of student development and campus activities, is excited for the event and to see how it will turn out.

“We encourage community participation,” Shelburne said. “We’ve already communicated with different churches to encourage them to come.”

All students play a vital role in the success of the event. Students are asked to donate any “rummage” lying around their dorm rooms and houses.

“Instead of tossing stuff,” Shelburne said, “[Use the rummage sale] as a good outlet for old stuff.”

Students can help in other ways besides donating items.

“Obviously they can come to the event,” Shelburne said. “We’re trying to make it as cheap as possible for students involved while still making a significant profit for scholarships.”

Think about the rummage sale as the time appraoches to pack up for summer and do a little spring cleaning around the house. OSF can use any and all “rummage” around peoples’ living spaces.

Donations can be dropped off in the campus activities office.  OSF will make arrangements to pick up any large items next week. Contact Philip Williamson or Sarah Greeson to schedule pick-up.

“Don’t throw your stuff away,” Williamson said. “Donate it and help your classmates stay here.”
