September 10, 2009

Ouachita Baptist University former pitcher Steve Smith has been called up to the Class High A Kinston Indians. The move was made by the Cleveland Indians Major League Baseball organization on Sept. 3 after Smith tied a team-record for saves with 26 for the Class A Lake County Captains.

The move to the Class High A Kinston Indians, is one step away from the Class AA Akron Aeros, and three steps away from the Cleveland Indians Major League Baseball organization.

Smith finished with a 2.36 ERA for Kinston, including 62 strikeouts in 52.2 innings of work on the mound while just walking 12.

Smith is joined by former Tigers catcher Derek Dibbens as former OBU baseball players in farm systems for Major League Baseball teams. Dibbens was recently picked up by the San Francisco Giants to handle catching duties.
