Baseball Falls in Season Opener to UAM

March 8, 2013

Friday’s series opener between the Ouachita Tigers and the Boll Weevils of Arkansas-Monticello ended in a 7-3 loss for Ouachita.

The Tigers (9-10-1, 5-5 GAC) opened up the scoring in the first inning, when Landon Flax scored on a groundout from Keegan Ghidotti.

The Boll Weevils (12-8, 6-4 GAC) answered in the bottom half of the inning with six runs though, taking an early 6-1 lead and giving the Tigers a huge hole to dig themselves out of.

UAM extended their lead to six runs in the bottom of the fourth, when they scored a runner on a groundout to Ouachita’s Landon Flax.

The Tigers were finally able to score again in the fourth, when Will Wallace recorded a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Ghidotti.

The Tigers scored another run in the sixth, when McCrae Jones grounded out to first base, scoring Chris Tavares, but it wasn’t enough to start a comeback.

Austin Watson was credited with the loss, after throwing an inning and struggling, giving up three hits and seven runs. Josh Reevescame in to relieve him, throwing seven innings and only giving up four hits and no runs.

Bobby Bryan recorded the win for Monticello, throwing 6.1 innings and recording two strikeouts while giving up three runs.

The Tigers and Boll Weevils are back at it on Saturday, with first pitch coming at noon in Monticello.
