Lady Tigers roll past rival HSU

February 26, 2009

Domino Miller scored 14 of her career-high 20 points in the first half as the Ouachita Baptist University women’s basketball team avenged an earlier season loss by routing rival Henderson State, 94-75, Thursday night in a Gulf South Conference West Division game at Bill Vining Arena.

Miller, who was 5-of-8 from the floor, had 20 points, but also was 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Gabby Coleman and A’Laeshia Adams each had 17 points, with Coleman finishing just an assist shy of a double-double by recording nine. Haley Griffin chipped in with 13 points as Ouachita (19-7 overall, 8-5 GSC West) were 29-of-63 shooting for 46 percent. The Lady Tigers benefited from the charity stripe, going 29-of-39 for 74 percent.

The Lady Tigers opened the game by Miller sinking a pair of free throws on a technical foul as the Lady Reddies had the wrong starter marked in the book.

Henderson State (10-15, 4-9) recovered and grabbed a 20-17 lead after a Danyelle Harris 3-pointer with 11:26 remaining in the opening half. But Ouachita reversed the trend which hurt them in the loss earlier in the season and used a commanding 22-10 run, capped by an Angela Colliver layup with 2:38 left to grab a 39-30 lead.

The Lady Tigers didn’t let up as Gabby Coleman scored the final five points to give Ouachita a 44-30 halftime lead as the Lady Reddies went the final 6:18 of the half without a field goal.

Ouachita extended the margin in the second half, 77-57, after a Coleman jumper with 7:13 remaining and Henderson State couldn’t recover.

Trenia Barbee paced the Lady Reddies with a game-high 21 points, while Chanlee Bottoms and Harris each recorded 13. Asaiah Lowe led Henderson State on the glass with 11 rebounds as the Lady Reddies were 27-of-73 (37 percent) from the floor.

Ouachita concludes the regular season 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28 at Harding in a Gulf South Conference West Division game.
