OBU’s Department of Visual Arts to host competition for students

March 4, 2009

Ouachita Baptist University’s department of visual arts will host a juried art competition for students that will be judged on April 3. The exhibit will be on display in the Hammons Gallery April 22-25 as part of OBU’s Scholars Day.

The competition will consist of three categories, studio art, graphic design and photography and is open to all art, design and photography students at Ouachita.

“We want to establish an annual event that provides all of our art, design and photography students an opportunity to exhibit their work in an actual juried show,” said David Bieloh, chair of OBU’s visual arts department and associate professor of graphic design. “For most of our students this will be their first experience with this, and we want to reward them for their work.”

Carey Roberson, associate professor of photography at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, will judge the items submitted for the competition. Cash awards will be given in each category for first, second and third place, and one piece will be named “Best in Show.” A local gallery will give an additional award to the artist whose work is named “Best in Show.”

To submit a work for this event, students must turn in printed or original art, design or photography, a completed entry form and an entry fee of $5. All material must be turned in to the visual arts department no later than April 1. The work does not have to be framed or matted upon initial entry.

Ouachita’s visual arts faculty said that they hope this event will generate more interest in the visual arts department and create recruitment and fundraising opportunities.
