Tennis wins division title

April 15, 2009

The men’s tennis team is having a winning season, and has clinched a sixth straight Gulf South West Division Title.

Leading the Tigers, No. 26 singles player junior Jan Plewinski has shown the fruits of his labor as has the rest of the team.

”The hard work we put in at the first of the year has really paid off,” said Head Coach Craig Ward.

Showing the profits of hard work and perseverance, sophopmore Till Heilshorn and freshman Jean Charles Diame also had big wins in the singles division at division championships.

“Our team really understands each other,” said sophomore Szymon Judek. “We have common goals and we have had an amazing season so far.”

The strong team bond can be responsible for the success in the doubles division.

Plewinski and Heilshorn won a close match against Harding, while  junior Mike Basler, freshman Daniel Moser, freshman Pierre Tafelski and Diame also came away with victories.

The team had multiple wins over Harding University, which helped Ouachita to earn the title.

“Coaching a team is a bit like flying an airplane,” Ward said. “The most important part is the take-off and the landing. We are in the process of coming in for the landing.”

The Gulf South Tournament begins April 17, and nationals are on May 7.

”We have our conference tournament and the NCAA Championships coming up and we want to be at our best for both of those,” Ward said. “It’s important to stay focused, continue working hard and trying to improve. If we do that, we give ourselves the best chance of performing our best for, the remainder of the year.”

The team played today at 10 a.m. against St. Edward’s at home.
