Carrie Brown awarded Audrey Caviness scholarship by AFMC

April 15, 2009

Carrie Brown, a junior piano performance major at Ouachita Baptist University, was recently awarded the Audrey Caviness scholarship by the Arkansas Federation of Music Clubs (AFMC).

Brown, from Knoxville, Ark., was surprised by the $400 award at the AFMC state convention in Jonesboro, Ark., where she was performing as the state winner in piano of the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) Biennial Student/Collegiate Auditions. The scholarship money will be given to OBU to be used toward Brown’s educational expenses.

“Carrie’s hard work and talent really came through this year in her successful junior recital at OBU and when she was chosen the NFMC state Student/Collegiate Auditions winner in piano,” said Dr. Ouida Keck, OBU professor of music and Brown’s piano teacher. “She has had many performance opportunities and is already beginning work on her senior recital to be given next fall.”

The Audrey Caviness scholarship is given to recognize an outstanding student who has shown great improvement. The late Audrey Caviness was a long-time member of the AFMC who was a piano teacher in Danville, Ark.

Brown, who is currently the accompanist for the Ouachita Singers, also is a vocalist and a cellist.
