May 24, 2010

MIAMI SHORES, Florida- After defeating Barry earlier in the season, No. 3 Ouachita Baptist couldn’t overcome an early 3-0 deficit in doubles play, as No. 4 Barry swept the Tigers, 5-0, in the 2010 NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis South Region No. 2 final on Saturday in Miami Shores, Florida at the Buccaneer Tennis Facility.

Ouachita (18-3) defeated Barry (21-4) on March 24, 5-4, but the Buccaneers started quickly on Saturday, as the doubles team of Marco Mokrzycki and Emanuel Fraitzl defeated the No. 28 duo of Ouachita freshman Tobias Kuhlmann and junior Till Heilshorn, 8-4. Barry’s Ales Svigelj and Max Wimmer then took down Ouachita sophomore Jean Charles Diame and sophomore Pierre Tafelski in 8-3 fashion. The final doubles match went to the Buccaneers when Ouachita senior Jan Plewinski and sophomore Daniel Moser lost to Andrew Sharnov and Sergio Velez with an 8-3 defeat.

In singles action, Barry won the first two finished singles matches, good enough for the necessary sweep, as No. 32 Emanuel Fraitzl defeated Heilshorn, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 3 spot, followed by another victory for the Buccaneers in the No. 5 spot as Ouachita’s Kuhlmann fell to Andrew Sharnov, 6-4, 7-5 to end the match.
