Angelo State takes doubleheader games from Ouachita Baseball in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas- Playing at the site of the Fort Worth ‘Cats, Angelo State found ways to produce runs in late innings to defeat Ouachita Baptist in a doubleheader non-conference series at LaGrave Field on Tuesday.

Ouachita (4-6) dropped a close decision in Game 1, 5-4, in 10 innings, while Angelo State (6-6) pitched a two-hitter in Game 2 for a 5-2 win.

In Game 1 action, the Tigers jumped on the board first when senior Sam McGill led off with a single, followed by an RBI single from senior Justin Hall to give Ouachita a 1-0 lead.

After Angelo State collected a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, the Tigers struck again in the third, as senior Cass Via came around to score on a sacrifice bunt from senior Ben Warner to tie the game at 2-2. In the fourth, Ouachita junior Tom Ward led off with a walk and came around to score on a passed ball, giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

The Rams answered back with a run in the fifth, while neither team scored until the eighth inning, as both offenses found a way to plate one run. For the Tigers, junior Brock Green doubled to deep center field, then scored on an RBI single from junior Brett Mazmanian three batters later.

After both teams were shut down in the ninth, Angelo State plated the deciding run in the bottom of the 10th after a walk and throwing error in the inning.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Ouachita’s Mazmanian doubled to left, then scored on an RBI single from senior Kyle Zimmerman. The only other run came in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Hall, scoring McGill after he reached on a hit by pitch.

For the doubleheader, Zimmerman was 3-for-6 with an RBI, while Mazmanian was 2-for-5 with an RBI, as well. The Game 1 loss on the mound for Ouachita went to senior Kolby Moore (1-3), who went 1 1/3 innings on the mound and gave up one run. For Game 2, sophomore Travis King (0-2) took the loss, giving up five earned runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Ouachita returns to Rab Rodgers Field on Saturday to face Northern Kentucky beginning at 12 p.m.
