First Thoughts of July: Dr. Horne

July 6, 2010

We have certainly felt the heat the last weeks, but what I have seen is much more important.  We have had over two thousand junior and senior high students on campus for Super Summer.  Hundreds of others have attended various camps.  The results are that these students have been introduced to Ouachita, but more importantly, they have committed themselves to Christ or deepened their walk with the Lord.  This is a great ministry each summer here.

I have also watched the physical improvements on campus.  Conger is down and Bailey is on the way!  The open sight line to our student village is very impressive.  The work on the green areas, parking lot, and our two newest dorms is shaping up beautifully.  Added to that, our great admissions team continues to reach students for the coming year.  August will be an exciting month when you return to campus.

July marks the month we remember the founding and blessing of the United States.  Our blessings are out of proportion to the rest of the world.  Our response is quite simple.  We recognize that God has blessed us to be a blessing to others.  This we can do and must do.

Enjoy the rest of the summer.  I really expect that the coming year is going to be extra good here at Ouachita.  Our staff and faculty are gearing up for you.  You are the life of the campus and the reason we exist.  It is a privilege to be your president.

I close with the words of the apostle Paul, “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.”  (Philippians 1:3)
