Improvements made to age-old Tiger facility

September 7, 2013

After more than 25 years, the press box at A. U. Williams field is restored and ready for another season of Tiger football.

Both the inside and outside of the structure were updated.

Renovations to the inside include new paint and equipment, and renovations to the outside include new siding.

The structure was not expanded, but the changes made will make it more aesthetically pleasing and more functional.

The designers did not want to risk losing the close proximity to the field that offers an ideal view of the field and exciting game day crowds.

They successfully renovated the structure, while still maintaining the aspects of the press box that were so important.

“The renovations created a better setting for us and a better setting for the equipment, while keeping the advantages from before,” said Dr. Jeff Root, dean of the school of humanities and Ouachita football commentator.

The construction, funded by donors, began the first week of July and was completed just before students returned in August.

The updated structure is expected to last a few years; however, they are always looking to the future.

“The press box needed to be brought up to date for safety and functionality, but in a few years we can consider bigger changes,” said Brett Powell, vice president for administrative services.

“We wanted to make it more appealing for everyone. This way we have both function and appeal.”

New changes could possibly include updating the outside of the press box and AstroTurf field.

However, these changes will take time and donor support.

In the meantime, the new press box, along with faithful Tiger fans, will make for another memorable season.
