Lessons and Carols presents a traditional worship service

December 8, 2008

Ouachita’s division of music marks the end of another fall semester with the traditional performance of Lessons and Carols.

This year is the 12th anniversary of Lessons and Carols. In the past, the performance has included recitation of scripture lessons, prayer and not only performances but congregational singing as well.

“Lessons and Carols is a traditional English worship service,” said junior musical theater major Samantha Parish, “… [Lessons and Carols] incorporates worship songs that mark the true meaning of Christmas.”

The performance has a different aim than other Christmas productions.

“Compared to Festival of Christmas …” Parrish said, “[Lessons and Carols] is calmer and is set more on singing songs to the Lord in remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ.”

Lessons and Carols often uses the  exact same songs as previous years. The service has also kept a similar structure of performance, creating a genuine tradition that Ouachita has deemed worthy to uphold.

“One of the only things that is different in Lessons and Carols is that many of the Bible translations that are used during the performances differ from year to year,” Parish said, “Because different or newer Bible [translations] are used to add a more unique feel to the readings.”

Lessons and Carols is not only campus wide, but also open to the public, giving the community outside of Ouachita’s campus an opportunity to experience the true meaning of Christmas and why it is celebrated.

“It is our version of a festive choir service, kind of like a candlelight service without the candles,” said junior Krysteena Koiner. “Anybody can come who wants to. It will be performed in Mabee Fine Arts, making it most likely a crowded event.”

Lessons and Carols will be performed Tuesday, Dec. 9. 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the McBeth Recital Hall in the Mabee Fine Art Center.
