Men’s Tennis begins fall season

September 13, 2011

The Ouachita Baptist men’s fall tennis season begins Friday. The men will travel to Oklahoma City where they will compete in the Oklahoma Collegiate Championships.

The tournament features several NCAA D-I and D-II schools along with junior colleges and NAIA universities. All matches will be played at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. Play begins Friday at 8 a.m.

“One of the things I like about this tournament is we get a lot of match play against people we have never seen,” said OBU men’s tennis coach Craig Ward. “We have a very young, eager team that needs a lot of match play.”

The men’s team returns four starters from last years team which finished 13 in the nation.  Helge Knuth, Ramon Abaitua, Teodor Anghle and Ernesto Laborda are returning for their second year. Newcomers will be James Ingrahm (redshirt), Cameron Walbert (transfer from Arkansas Fort Smith) and freshman Kenny Brasil.

“This is a great group of guys with tremendous character’” added Ward. “Last year the guys improved tremendously from the beginning of the year to the end. The returning players all played over the summer and had great results. We are going to be our best and that’s all I can ask and of course we want to win.”

The Tigers will again be in action Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships in Springfield, Mo.
