OBU Swimming has big first day at NCAA Championships

HOUSTON, Texas – It was a big opening day for the Ouachita Baptist University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams at the NCAA Division II National Championships Wednesday at the CRWC Natatorium.

The Ouachita men’s 200 medley relay team of Nelson Silva, Hal Eubanks, Max Heinze and Radu Badalac set another national record with a time of 1:27.25. The group had set a previous record set by the team of 1:28.52. In fact, the foursome broke the mark in qualifying in 1:28.04. The women’s team of Sarah Watson, Jenny Christensen, Gromova and May took third in 1:43.74 in the event.

Wayne State leads the women’s results with a 114, followed by Drury (82.5), UC San Diego (74), Truman State (63) and Ouachita (62).

On the men’s side, Drury holds the top spot with a 101. Wayne State is second with a 98.5 and Ouachita third (78). Limestone (74) and Grand Valley State (53) round out the Top 5.

The first event of the day was the women’s 1000 and Megan Young came across in 10:29.15 to place 24th. In the men’s event, Vicente Condorelli took 22nd in 9:31.31 and Will Wood placed 25th in 9:35.33.

In the championship finals of the women’s 200 IM, Sarah Watson and Ksenia Gromova placed fifth and seventh, respectively in 2:03.42 and 2:03.83. Katie Patterson was 14th in the consolation finals in 2:06.55. In the men’s event, Nelson Silva took seventh in 1:50.07.

In the women’s 50 Free consolation finals, Trina May placed 16th in 23.78. In the men’s event, championship finals, Eubanks took eighth in 20.11.

The NCAA Division II Championships continue March 12-14 in Houston, Texas.
