Ouachita Combined Band to present concert April 28

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—The Ouachita Baptist University Combined Band will present a concert April 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jones Performing Arts Center on Ouachita’s campus. Dr. Craig Hamilton, chair of music education and director of bands, and Robert Hesse, athletic band director, will serve as conductors for this performance.

The concert will open with Joseph Willcox Jenkins’ “American Overture for Band,” followed by Tony McCutchen’s arrangement of “Dance” by Ney Rosauro and “Strange Humors” by John Mackey. The band will continue with “A Friend Remembered” by James Swearington, “Cruzan Dances” by Robert Longfield, and Walter Beeler’s transcription of Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait.” Next, the band will perform Bruce H. Houseknecht’s arrangement of Pavel Tchesnokov’s “Salvation is Created,” followed by “In Memoriam” by Mark Camphouse and concluding with Sammy Nestico’s arrangement of “The Boys of Wexford” by Robert Joyce.

The concert will feature 88 OBU student musicians including a marimba solo during “Dance” by Kate Hughes, a freshman instrumental music education major from Fort Worth, Texas, and the winner of the 2009 Ouachita Baptist University Instrumental Concerto Competition. Also, Dr. Scott Holsclaw, dean of the school of fine arts, will serve as narrator during the piece “Lincoln Portrait.” This piece is being played in honor of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday.
