Softball Works First Day Split with Southern Arkansas

April 22, 2013

As they close out their regular season this weekend, the Ouachita Lady Tiger softball team hosts Southern Arkansas. The Lady Tigers and Lady Muleriders opened up their four game series on Saturday with a pair of match-ups, ending in a 3-2 win for the Lady Tigers that was followed by a 9-1 win for Southern Arkansas.

The Lady Tigers (16-31, 10-20 GAC) capped off a win in the first game of the afternoon with a fifth inning rally in which they scored two runs. They kicked off the game with a run in the first inning, coming from a Kailey Madden double to left field that scored Megan Askew.

Southern Arkansas (26-26, 16-16 GAC) scored two runs in the third inning, giving them the lead with a sacrifice fly and a single to left field.

The Lady Tigers found life in the fifth inning though, and an RBI single from Bailey Sanders followed by an RBI single from Madden gave the Lady Tigers a 3-2 lead that held until the conclusion of the contest.

Madden finished the game 2-of-3 with two RBIs, while Sanders, one of the two seniors on the team, recorded a 1-of-1 game and the other RBI.

Abbi Frakes won the first game on the mound with a complete game performance in which she recorded nine strikeouts and only gave up three hits. Both of Southern Arkansas’ runs in the game were unearned.

The second game of the afternoon was Southern Arkansas’ from the start. The Lady Muleriders scored a run in the first, followed by another in the second, giving them a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second.

Suzie Gresham recorded an RBI double in the bottom of the second for the Lady Tigers only run of the game, but they weren’t able to score a runner from that point on.

SAU went on to score another four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to put the game away, forcing a split of day one’s games.

Gresham finished 1-of-2 in the game, drawing a walk and recording an RBI along the way. SAU’s Mackenzie Spanko put up solid numbers in the game, with a 3-of-4 game from the plate, including two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Lady Tigers and Lady Muleriders return to the diamond on Sunday to close out their series and the regular season. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
