February 25, 2013

Band students from 14 colleges and universities statewide were selected to comprise the 2013 Arkansas Intercollegiate Band, including 10 students from Ouachita Baptist University.

“Our students did a wonderful job and represented Ouachita and the School of Fine Arts exceptionally well,” said Dr. Craig Hamilton, OBU’s Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music, director of bands and chair of music education.

Ouachita students performing in the band include: Elizabeth Baker, a junior music performance and French major from Grapevine, Texas, on flute; Hannah Bowen, a sophomore choral music education major from Lewisville, Texas, on clarinet; Drew Ervin, a sophomore music performance and computer science major from Springdale, Ark., on percussion; Maegan Hodge, a junior Spanish and secondary education major from Springdale, Ark., on flute; Chris Hogan, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Bartlesville, Okla., on percussion; Allison King, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Fort Worth, Texas, on bass clarinet; Megan Massey, a junior instrumental music education major from Weatherford, Texas, on bass clarinet; Brent Nessler, a junior instrumental music education major from Rowlett, Texas, on tenor saxophone; Crista Riggs, a junior chemistry and biology major from Edmond, Okla., on clarinet; and Chelsea Villanueva, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Bentonville, Ark., on clarinet.

“The AIB is an opportunity for our students to rehearse and perform with their colleagues from other universities throughout the state,” Hamilton said. “They also have the honor of working with some of the top conductors in the field.”

Dr. Kevin Sedatole, this year’s Arkansas Intercollegiate Band clinician, currently serves as director of bands, professor of music and chair of the conducting area at the Michigan State University College of Music.

With only 24 hours to rehearse, the Arkansas Intercollegiate Band performed together for the first time, “Ecstatic Fanfare” by Steven Bryant, “Elegy for Albinoni” by Shelly Hanson and “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff and John Krance.
