Humans of OBU: Faculty Couples

March 4, 2016

Mark: “So she’s the youngest and only girl in her family. Pretty protective dad, which is pretty understandable. So we went down to her house to tell her family. It was kind of a ‘just telling them’ instead of ‘asking for permission’ kind of deal, which I could have done differently. So they always had the TV on and we’re sitting there, everyone was still for a while and I got up, grabbed the remote and turned the TV off. The family looked at me like, ‘What are you doing?’ I said, ‘Margaret and I have gotten engaged and were gonna get married when I’m back from overseas and right after she graduates. We just wanted to let you know and see how you feel about it.’ Not very eloquently handled. Her dad just looks at me goes, ‘No.’ He still has never said yes, he’s still not on board 25 years later.”

Margaret: “We knew he was joking, but not really.”
