OBU men’s basketball wins fourth straight, beats Central Baptist

The Ouachita Baptist University men’s basketball team won its fourth straight after downing Central Baptist, 69-51, Monday night at Bill Vining Arena.

Jaranimo Marks led the Tigers (4-1) with 15 points, while Daniel Maddox recorded 11 as Ouachita was 25-of-55 shooting for 45.5 percent.

Ouachita raced out to an 8-3 advantage after a layup by Quintin Smith with 17:03 remaining in the first half. The Mustangs cut the deficit to 12-8 with 14:07 left after a 3-point play by Ryan Barnes.

The Tigers remained in front and extended the lead to 23-14, their largest lead of the half, after Jaranimo Marks scored on a fastbreak layup with 7:09 left. Central Baptist chipped away at the Ouachita advantage and trimmed the margin to 28-23 after a 3-pointer by Rodderick Briggs with 16 seconds remaining in the first half.

Central Baptist (5-4) cut the deficit to 38-34 after a free throw by Briggs, but that was as close as the Mustangs would get.

Ouachita used a 10-2 run, capped by a Marks 3-pointer off an assist by Roger Eiland with 9:31 remaining. The Tigers put the game and extended the margin to 63-43 after a fastbreak layup by Antonio Benjamin with 2:46 left.

Michael Holder paced Central Baptist with 15 points, while Ryan Barnes chipped in with 12. The Mustangs were 16-of-57 from the floor for 28.1 percent.

Ouachita travels 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29 to Durant, Okla., to take on Southeastern Oklahoma State.
