January 4, 2009

The Ouachita Baptist University women’s basketball team made it sixth straight and avenged an earlier season lost to Montevallo by defeating the Lady Falcons, 82-68, Saturday afternoon at Bill Vining Arena.
The Lady Tigers (9-2) not only picked up their sixth straight win, but won the contest by scoring 70 or more points for the ninth time this season. Ouachita also avenged a loss to Montevallo on 71-68 on Nov. 22.

A’Laeshia Adams paced the Lady Tigers with 16 points on 4-of-11 shooting, including going 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Haley Griffin scored all 15 of her points in the second half and Angela Colliver recorded 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting as Ouachita was 25-of-61 (41 percent) from the floor, while draining 11-of-25 3-pointers.

Alicia Lewis scored 15 of her team-high 18 points in the second half to lead Montevallo (4-11). Manal Cali added 13, while Katie Vanderhyden finished with 11 as the Lady Falcons were 24-of-52 (46.2 percent) from the field.

Ouachita raced out to an 11-5 advantage after a Colliver layup with 16:23 left in the first half. But Montevallo, which is competing in the Gulf South Conference for the final time this season before moving to the Peach Belt Conference, kept the game close, cutting the Lady Tiger margin to 12-11 after a Cali jumper with 14:16 remaining.

The Lady Tigers extended the lead to 23-14 after a Domino Miller 3-pointer with 9:37 left, but again the Lady Falcons kept it close by trimming the deficit to 27-21 after a three by Shan Jones.

Ouachita closed the first half on a 12-8 run to take a 39-26 advantage into the half.

The Lady Tigers put the game away early in the second half, pushing the lead to 48-28 after a pair of free throws by Adams.

The Lady Tigers play host 12 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 6 against Rhema at Bill Vining Arena in Kids School Day.
