OBU baseball falls to St. Joseph’s

February 23, 2009

The third-ranked Ouachita Baptist University baseball team suffered its second straight setback Sunday afternoon as St. Joseph’s pounded out 18 hits on its way to a 16-3 win over the Tigers at Tartt Field.

Ouachita (11-5) scored a run in the top of the first, second and fourth innings, while St. Joseph took advantage of four Tiger pitchers and four errors to cruise to the win, which ended after the seventh inning because of the NCAA run rule.

The Pumas scored one in the second, two in the third, five in the fifth and erupted for eight in the sixth.

Jerry Helferich (2-2) surrendered six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with a strikeout in four innings. Trent Lingle worked a third of an inning by giving up two runs on one hit with four walks. Sean O’Rourke was tagged for seven runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts and Beau Martin pitched a third of an inning, giving up a run on one hit.

Gordon Gateman improved to 2-0 on the season by working five innings for St. Joseph’s. He gave up three runs on eight hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Jesse Martin pitched the final two innings in relief.

Ouachita resumes play 1:00 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27 at Rab Rodgers Field against Wisconsin-Parkside. The game will be available to listen to on the Ouachita Baptist University Athletic Web site at: www.obutigers.com.
