ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University’s Ben M. Elrod Center for Family & Community is organizing the annual Fall Tiger Serve Day for Saturday, Sept. 26. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up to serve by Monday, Sept. 21.
This is the 13th annual Fall Tiger Serve Day, and as each year arrives, so does the anticipation of more volunteers to serve the Arkadelphia community.
“Each year, we see the number of volunteers grow, which is exciting because this means more and more needs in this community are being met,” said Judy Duvall, assistant director of the Elrod Center. “Indeed, the lives of the volunteers and community individuals are changed for the better through this experience.”
“There will be an air of celebration and excitement as the volunteers gather at the Elrod Center the morning of TSD,” Duvall said. “They will be able to enjoy the wonderful music of OBU’s Jazz Band, eat Krispy Kreme donuts, pick up a new Tiger Serve Day t-shirt and get tools and job assignments for the morning.” After a morning of service, Southern Bancorp in Arkadelphia will provide grilled hamburgers and hotdogs for the volunteers.
Rachel Griffith, a junior from Greenwood, Ark., said, “Tiger Serve Day is a great way to connect with our student body and our community. Getting involved as freshmen adds to the Ouachita experience.”
“We are looking for new ways to involve freshman,” Duvall noted. “We encourage freshmen to sign up individually if they do not have a team. They will be put on a team, and this will be a great way to get to know other students and to be introduced to the community.”
Encouraging the OBU community to participate, Duvall said, “Tiger Serve Day is an opportunity to give back. We live in the middle of a community that has great need. There are senior adults, single moms, disabled individuals and others that could greatly benefit from the services that this day provides.”
Korrie Browning, a junior from Huston, Texas, has volunteered for the past two years. “Volunteering is important because it’s a way for us to give back to the community of which we’re a part,” she said. “We show Christ through our actions.”
“It would be wonderful if every Ouachita student, faculty and staff member that was able to serve would volunteer on Tiger Serve Day,” Duvall said. “Imagine the good that could be done and the needs that could be met!”
