No. 3 Ouachita defeats No. 8 Florida Southern, 5-2, in second round of NCAA Division II Championships

MIAMI SHORES, Florida- After a 2-0 start to doubles action, No. 3 Ouachita Baptist defeated No. 8 Florida Southern, 5-2, in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis South Region No. 2 Regional Championships on Friday at Miami Shores, Florida. The Tigers advance to play No. 4 Barry on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Regional final.

Ouachita (18-2) began action with an 8-1 victory from the No. 28 duo of freshman Tobias Kulmann and junior Till Heilshorn over Florida Southern’s Brian deMontfort and Ben Taylor. The Tigers picked up the No. 3 doubles match victory, as well, as Ouachita senior Jan Plewinski and sophomore Daniel Moser defeated Florida Southern’s C.J. Johnson and Christian Lange, 8-6. Florida Southern (17-3) picked up the lone doubles victory with the No. 14 duo of Roman Schirmaier and Michael Knoedler with a 8-4 victory over Ouachita sophomores Jean Charles Diame and Pierre Tafelski, 8-4.

In singles action, the Tigers split the opening pair of matches, as No. 15 Michael Knoedler for Florida Southern defeated Ouachita’s No. 26 Jan Plewinski, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 1 singles spot, while Ouachita sophomore Daniel Moser defeated Ben Taylor, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 6 spot.

With a 3-2 lead, the Tigers closed with a pair of singles victory to clinch the match, as Ouachita’s Till Heilshorn defeated Christian Lange, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot, and Ouachita freshman Tobias Kuhlmann closed out the victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Guenther Fercher in the No. 5 spot.

No. 3 Ouachita Baptist returns to the court on Saturday to face No. 4 Barry University on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Buccaneer Tennis Center in the South Regional final.
