OBU Cheer Squad Needs Male Member

July 16, 2010

The OBU Cheer Squad is looking for another male member. Male cheer members are very important to the success of the squad but often are difficult to find. There is a desire for tumbling skills and ability to do lifts but it is not a requirement. Male cheer members do not participate in dance routines.

I am aware of the hesitation of many qualified male students to join the “cheerleader squad” for various reasons. Truthfully, I probably had the same reasons when I was a student at Ouachita, even though we actually had about 6 or 7 male cheer squad members then. My opinion is vastly different now that I’ve had the chance to sponsor the OBU cheer squad for the past 4 years. Male cheer members are very athletic and require great upper body strength and coordination. In fact in attending the national cheer competition, the male members were some of the most highly trained athletes I’ve seen.

If you are interested in getting more information about becoming a male cheer squad member, please let me know. These is a scholarship provided each semester. Practice is scheduled to not conflict with school activities. Cheer squad members only attend in-town OBU football and basketball games.
