ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University will host its annual Service of Lessons & Carols in McBeth Recital Hall on Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
A Service of Lessons & Carols is a worship service held annually at Ouachita that is rooted in the 16th century English tradition of reading nine scriptures and singing nine Christmas carols.
“At Ouachita our tradition has been to ask a cross section of our students, staff and faculty to be the readers,” said Gary Gerber, OBU director of choral activities.
“It is nice to have a special, meaningful time to reflect on the true meaning of the season,” he added.
Each year, a different academic school is asked to participate in the reading of scriptures. This year that role will be filled by the Huckabee School of Education, which will provide four students, a faculty member and staff member to lead in the scripture readings for the evening. Dr. Stan Poole, vice president for academic affairs; Phil Hardin, assistant to the president for administration; and Ian Cosh, vice president for community and international engagement, will also participate as scripture readers.
Ouachita musical groups, including Ouachita Singers, Women’s Chorus and Handbell Ringers, will each perform two selections and will assist in leading congregational hymns for all participants. Russell Hodges, associate professor of music and music librarian at Ouachita, will play the organ.
