Baseball Takes First Victory of 2012

February 14, 2012

After dropping game 1 of their weekend series with the University of North Alabama (5-1), the Ouachita Tigers (1-6) split Sunday’s doubleheader with the Lions, finally securing their first victory of the season in Game 2 of Sunday’s action. The Tigers lost the first one by a score of 7-6, but rebounded in the next game, clinching a 5-2 victory.

In the first game, Tiger pitcher Zac Treece was credited with the loss after relieving starter Ryan Westover. Westover threw six innings, collecting four strike outs while holding North Alabama to six runs, enough to keep the game deadlocked at six as he left the mound. Treece pitched .1 of an inning, giving up the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brock Green and Tom Ward both recorded two RBI’s for the Tigers while both of them recorded hits in two of their four plate appearances. North Alabama’s Claunch was credited with the victory, throwing five innings after coming in to relieve the Lions starting pitcher. Ouachita eventually fell by a score of 7-6, as they were unable to score any runs in the top of the seventh.

In game two of the double-header, Ouachita’s Josh Everett took the mound for the Tigers, throwing all seven innings and moving to 1-1 on the season. Everett recorded an impressive 10 strikeouts over his seven innings in the game while giving up two runs, one of which was earned. Green recorded a home run for the Tigers while recording three RBI’s. Parker Norris finished with a two of four performance from the plate, while Tom Ward and Duncan Collins both contributed RBI’s for the Tigers. Ouachita’s victory marks the first for recently named head coach Jeremy Haworth.

Ouachita returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, when they host St. Josephs for a double-header, marking their home-opener of the 2012 season. Those games will begin at 12 noon, with the first being a seven inning game and the second being a nine inning game.
