Eight-Run Seventh Inning Helps Tiger Baseball Surge Past Arkansas Tech

April 15, 2013

Rab Rodgers Field hosted a shootout on Friday afternoon, as the Ouachita Tigers and Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech combined for 23 runs and 23 hits in route to a 13-10 win for the Tigers.

Ouachita (18-18-1, 10-12 GAC) used an eight-run performance in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a late lead, fueled by a three run homer from Chris Tavares and three RBI hits.

The Wonder Boys (26-15, 13-9 GAC) scored first, with a throwing error allowing a runner to score.

Ouachita finally got on the board, taking the lead in the bottom of the second when Duncan Collins popped a two RBI single up the middle.

Tech answered with a three-run showing in the fifth inning, taking a 4-2 lead. They weren’t done stretching the lead yet though, as they put up another three runs in the sixth and gave themselves a 7-2 advantage.

The Tigers answered Tech’s fifth inning run total with three of their own in the bottom of the fifth, but Tech fired back again, putting another three runs on the board and taking a 10-5 lead.

The bottom of the seventh was when the tables turned though, as the Tigers notched seven runs, including Tavares’ aforementioned three run shot and a trio of RBI situations.

The rest of the game was fairly quiet, with neither team able to come up with anything and the game ending in a 13-10 final.

Ben Gielow got the win for the Tigers after coming in to relieve starter Davis Ward. Zach Skelton took the loss for Tech with a one inning showing in which he gave up four runs, two of which were earned.

Tech’s Cesar Abreu finished 3-of-3 from the plate, recording two runs scored and three RBIs. Ouachita’s Duncan Collins picked up five RBIs on a 2-of-4 performance from the plate. Tavares notched three RBIs on a 2-of-5 day from the plate.

The Tigers and Wonder Boys are back at it on Saturday, with action scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
