Nathan Perry plays in humane society benefit concert

Ouachita proudly boasts much talent, and the singer/songwriter scene is not to be forgotten. Senior Nathan Perry, accounting major from Benton, Ark., is one of those talented artists the Ouachita community is getting to see a lot from lately.

Perry, along with Kyle Jackson, sophomore Christian studies major from Hot Springs, Ark., hosted a benefit concert Tuesday night in the Tiger Den to help support the local humane society in Arkadelphia.

“I was pumped they chose me to be a part of this fundraiser because I’m all about some dogs,” Perry said.

Perry himself has a dog named Hank, which he got from a shelter.

“Everyone needs a shelter dog,” Perry said.

The idea for the benefit concert came from Perry’s public speaking class.

“I think it was a class project or something like that,” Perry said. “I never really questioned it too much, I just thought it was dope so I was on board.”

Perry was joined by fellow musicians Spencer Bryson, Dane Jenson, and Steven Rutherford.

“They’re fun to work with, they’re good at what they do and they’re patient,” Perry said. “Patience is important.”

The music journey is only just beginning for Perry. His latest single “Like a Giant” was recently released on Spotify and iTunes.

“The recording process has been a lot more involved than I originally expected,” Perry said.

With weekends spent in the studio trying to record everything just right to get the right sound, and a few weeks spent listening to the songs over and over to make sure everything mixes well, the process can be time-consuming.

That being said, the whole process is worth it for Perry.

“I love writing songs,” Perry said. “To make music and not have to have another career to support myself is the dream.”

Most of Perry’s music involved the theme of relationships and altered relationships.

“I have songs about mistakes I’ve made that I’m still going through and dealing with, and songs that keep me hopeful about things to come.”

Speaking of things to come, Perry hopes to release a full-length album this coming fall.

“Be on the lookout for that, and I guess only time will tell for the rest.”
