OBU men’s soccer ties University of Alabama, Huntsville 1-1

September 27, 2008

After falling behind early in the first half and playing a man down for most of the second half, the Ouachita Baptist men’s soccer team rallied to a 1-1 draw against UAH in a Gulf South Conference opener for both schools Saturday afternoon at Charger Field.

UAH (0-7-1 overall, 0-0-1 GSC) scored in the seventh minute to break a 0-0 score. Andres Flores picked up his first goal of the season off an assist by Devin Schleif and Brett Hughson.
The Tigers (2-1-1, 0-0-1) registered their first shot on goal in the 20th minute as Andreas Kruase’s attempt on goal was saved by UAH goalkeeper Tyler Earley.

Just six minutes later, Schleif had a chance to make it 2-0 as his shot banged off the crossbar.

Ouachita played most of the second half a man down as James Rogers picked up a red card after a hard tackle. Because of the red card, Rogers will miss the next game.

Just four minutes after Rogers received the red card ejection, Jarod Townsend was fouled inside the penalty arena. His penalty kick was saved by Earley, but the ball bounced back to Townsend, who banged in the equalizer to tie the contest at 1 in the 65th minute.

Both teams had opportunities late in the game, but neither could score the go-ahead goal.

Tigers goalkeeper Neal Ozmun recorded seven saves, while Earley had six. UAH outshot Ouachita, 15-10 and had seven corner kicks to none for the Tigers.

Ouachita returns home Friday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 5 for a pair of Gulf South Conference matches at the OBU Soccer Complex. The Tigers will meet GSC powerhouses West Florida Friday and Montevallo Sunday.
