Ouachita Baptist University will host guest musician Dr. Andrew Cooperstock for a piano recital Monday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. Cooperstock will also offer a master class prior to the recital at 3 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

A solo pianist and chamber musician, Cooperstock has appeared on six continents and in most of the 50 states. He has performed at the United Nations, New York’s Alice Tully, Merkin and Carnegie halls, Broadway’s 54 Below, Greenwich Village’s Le Poisson Rouge and Brooklyn’s BargeMusic.

Cooperstock is a graduate of the Juilliard School and the Cincinnati and Peabody conservatories. He is currently chair of the keyboard departments at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Rocky Ridge Music Center, a teacher at the Vianden International Music Festival in Luxembourg and an honorary faculty member at Guangxi Arts Institute in China. Previously, Cooperstock served at the University of Oklahoma and Brevard Music Center.

For the recital, Cooperstock will perform the piano music of Leonard Bernstein, including “Touches,” “Four Sabras,” “Sonata,” “Anniversaries,” “Bridal Suite in Two Parts with Three Encores” for two pianos and “El Salón Mexico.”

Dr. Adam Haas, visiting assistant professor of music at OBU, will accompany Cooperstock on “Bridal Suite.” Haas said he is excited that Ouachita students have the opportunity to attend Cooperstock’s recital.

“Seeing a musician of his caliber and experience really motivates our students to practice and improve,” Haas said. “His master class should be very beneficial for our piano students as it will give them a different perspective on how to play their pieces.”

Cooperstock has also been featured in recitals and concerto appearances for international music festivals such as Chautauqua, Brevard and Round Top and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. He has performed for National Public Radio, Radio France and the BBC and recorded for such labels as Azica, Bridge and Naxos, among others.
