Leadership team “goes above” expectations for Sept. 22 TSD

September 13, 2007

After 10 years of service to the community, the Tiger Serve Day leadership team is once again set to equip Ouachita students to serve Arkadelphia residents. This year approximately 300 Ouachita students will go out into the community to take on projects ranging from simple tasks such as yard mainenance, to more complicated jobs like house painting.

Because of the abundant requests for volunteer work, the TSD leadership team is trying to focus on the individuals who have special needs, or are part of the elderly community.

“We are trying to find individuals with great need that we can serve, and giving priority to those individuals,” said Judy Duvall, assistant director of the Elrod Center said.

“However, students will not only be assisting individual members of the community in their homes, but volunteers will be doing work at parks and various churches around Arkadelphia.”

Also new on the agenda for TSD this fall is Sgt. Richie Smith, who is leading a group of Arkadelphia residents on a Code Enforcement clean-up effort.

According to Duvall and others on the TSD leadership team, they are excited because this will mark the first year that members of the community have partnered with Ouachita students to help clean up Arkadelphia.

If not for the dedication of a few students, event such as this which greatly help our community would not be possible said Duvall.

“The leadership team this year is unbelievable,” she said. “Ian [Cosh] and I are both excited about the quality of leadership; they have gone above what we expected. By the time TSD gets here, they will have put in five weeks worth of effort to make the day seem flawless to the volunteers, and to those who are having work done. A tremendous amount of planning goes into every TSD, and this 10-year anniversary is no exception.”

At noon, Saturday, Sept. 22, Sgt. Smith will provide hot dogs to all the volunteers and the Elrod Center will be handing out Krispy Kream Doughnuts to all the participants. The day will begin at 8 a.m.
