January 16, 2009

The Ouachita Baptist University men’s basketball team couldn’t rally from a second-half deficit as the Tigers dropped their second straight, falling 51-42 Thursday night to Christian Brothers in a Gulf South Conference West Division game at Bill Vining Arena.

After both teams traded buckets for nearly the first 15 minutes of the first half, Christian Brothers used a 7-1 run to grab a 22-15 advantage on a free throw by Nick Kohs with 3:12 remaining. Ouachita (10-5 overall, 0-2 GSC West) battled back, cutting the margin to 22-18 after Brandon Rose scored on a layup with 54 seconds left in the first half.

The Tigers were able to cut the Buccaneers lead to 26-23 with 17:04 remaining on a free throw by Jaranimo Marks, but Christian Brothers (13-2, 2-0) used a 6-0 run, capped by Kohs jumper to push the margin to 32-23 with 14:15 left.

Christian Brothers put the game away late as the Tigers were unable to get any closer than five points.

Marks led Ouachita with 16 points as the Tigers were 16-of-44 (36 percent) shooting and 2-of-18 from behind the 3-point line.

Kohs finished in double figures with a double-double, 21 points and 14 rebounds. Reggie Peyton added 14 points as the Buccaneers were 17-of-41 (41.5 percent) from the floor.

Ouachita travels 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 17 to Arkansas-Monticello in a Gulf South Conference West Division matchup. The game can be heard on the Ouachita Baptist University Athletic Web site at: www.obutigers.com.
