Intramural football tournament draws near

October 10, 2008

The most important part of every young’s man life has again begun on campus: intramural football season. This might possibly be the most competitive year in recent memory in regular season play. (Just trust me on that, I’ve been here a while.)

Then you look at what brings success in flag football, two things come to mind: defense and a good, solid quarterback. Those two aspects are vital to a team’s overall success in the scheme of things. A few former football players don’t hurt either.

Beginning in men’s upper division play, Rex Horne returns as the defending champion, leading all teams with a 6-0 unblemished record, as well as average scoring (31 points) and team defense (3.5 points) per game.

Teams that will challenge in tournament play (also known as the only time that games matter) will include current No. 2 seed, Kappa Phat, which boasts a 5-1 record and features the best middle linebacker of all-time in Beau Landers.

There are a host of teams that could include the runner-up last season: the Benchwarmers and an unpredictable, yet talented Beta Black team in the championship game.

Kappa Phat is by far the most consistent of the remainder of teams, but an upset by a surprising lower seeded team in any game is definitely possible. Look out for a team like the Therapists in the first round.

In women’s upper division play, it’s a two-team race at this point between 5-1 record teams in You Know and fan favorite Freshman 15.

In paper, it’d be easy to go with the softball laden team of You Know, which gives up an average of 1.3 points per game, but everyone enjoys an upset, so let’s say it comes down to a one point final second play by Molly Magee for the big enchilada, 22-21 (no pun intended). I mean they have cute shirts for one thing and refreshments from team moms. Who else can say that, honestly?

In the men’s lower division a rare situation presents itself with two undefeated teams in the Over 30 team of faculty/students and the Beta Bandits. There are also two one-loss teams in the freshman tandem of the Thundercats and the Red Shirts (also known as Tony and them).

In the end, only the strong survive, and that will be the team of Over 30 with a victory over the Thundercats, 28-14. Over 30’s Chris Babb to Kevin Cornelius has been money since the Supremes were toppin’ the charts! (I think that was a while ago?)

In women’s lower division play, Soulja Girlz is in full control with a 7-0 record, but don’t count out the electrifying freshman team of EnFuego, coached by Jake “the snake” Hilburn. Coaching wins championships, and EnFuego follows suit with that motto, winning 21-13.

As it is in life, nothing is certain, so don’t be in despair if your team stands at 0-7 at the moment. The tournament changes everything, so there is hope for a hopeless record. After all, I’m an Arkansas Razorbacks fan.
