Tuesdays have a new meaning for some Ouachita students as a new season of “Dancing with the Stars” is underway. Each week, students follow the popular dance competition as the contestants vie for high-score and viewer votes in hopes of winning the coveted Mirrorball Trophy. The show pairs together professional ballroom dancers with celebrities who learn different styles of ballroom dance. This season’s cast brings a variety of familiar faces to the competition, including Jenna Dewan, Tyler Cameron, Julia Stiles, Harry Shum Jr., Maura Higgins and Taylor Hanson. These and all the other celebrities competing on the show this season vary in previous dance experience, which gives the show an entertaining twist. From energetic jives to timeless waltzes, each duo brings something unique to the ballroom that gives the loyal viewers something to talk about.
For some Ouachita students, the famous personalities, as well as the personalities of the professional dancers on the show, can be just as entertaining as the dancing itself. Ashley Drees, a member of the Ouachtia Dance Team said, “I love to watch the pros because I think their dancing is just so good I have to appreciate it.” She went on to discuss how if there is not a celebrity that she loves on the show, she will watch for which pro trains their partner the best.
While the dancing or the personalities may be what entices viewers to tune in each week, watching “Dancing with the Stars” can be a way to have a sense of community in a busy semester here at Ouachita. In the midst of homework, classes, Tiger Tunes practice and each moment in between, Tuesday nights can present an opportunity to relax and enjoy time with friends. Margret Guerra expressed her love for Tuesday nights and watching Dancing with the Stars. “I try to watch with my roommate Layten every week, but I love to collectively watch it with as many people who can come,” Guerra said. She is even a part of various group chats that are solely dedicated to “Dancing with the Stars.” “I love to hear everyone’s opinions,” she went on to say.
As the season continues, students are already making their prediction on who could take home the Mirrorball Trophy. Both Drees and Guerra think that Harry Shum Jr. and his partner Jenna Johnson will make it far in the competition, but also have different opinions for who may win overall. Drees believes that American figure skater Amber Glenn could take home the trophy, while Guerra thinks that two-time Paralympian, Ezra French, could win it all.
A simple television show can create meaningful connections and bring people together on a college campus. Whether students tune in for the dancing, the celebrities, the competition or just to spend time with friends, “Dancing with the Stars” gives some Ouachita students something fun to look forward to each Tuesday.
